Out of the Frying Pan: a free public forum

What is really frying your chips? Is it genetically engineered (GE) cottonseed oil? Why does it matter? Why should we be concerned about GE foods? And why have over 180 of Australia’s leading chefs signed the GE-free Chef’s Charter? Panelists for this free public forum include leading food writer and food activist John Newton; Dr Carole Hungerford, GP, author and lecturer; Rochelle Porteous, Greenpeace campaigner, as well as a celebrity chef.

Late last year the first commercial GE canola crops were harvested in NSW and Victoria –  so locally produced GE canola is entering our food chain, unlabelled. GE canola oil can be found in an extensive number of processed foods and canola meal can be used to feed livestock. Even worse, we do not know that we are eating food that contains GE canola or other imported GE ingredients, because under current laws they remain unlabelled. Get the low down on GE foods and find out why oils ain’t just oils.

Out of the Frying Pan Free Public Forum 6.30pm – 8pm Wednesday 14th October; Mitchell Theatre, Sydney Mechanics School of Arts.
